Sand Lightweight Cotton Canvas Carpenter Pant
A carpenter trouser in a sand cotton canvas, drawn from the American workwear tradition of hard-wearing trousers built for manual trades. The cloth is a Japanese rinse-washed canvas based on a vintage military fabric, chosen to be as tough as denim but softer and flatter in appearance. Double knees, twin-needle seams, copper rivets and a leg utility pocket keep the working vocabulary, while slanted front pockets make it easier to wear day to day. It is cut on a straight-leg, mid-rise workwear block, made in Portugal, and is intended as an everyday casual trouser that softens and fades with use.
In Proper Cloth
Di Sondrio Khaki Heavyweight Heirloom 5-Pocket
Proper Cloth does not offer a carpenter pattern with double knees or a leg utility pocket, so we built the closest workwear trouser it does offer: a five-pocket with a straight leg, a metal tack button fly, rivets and belt loops. For the cloth we chose a khaki cotton twill from Tessuti di Sondrio, picking a solid, sandy khaki and a dense, durable cotton to match the original's colour and sturdy, plain workwear look. The Italian twill is much heavier and smoother than the rinse-washed canvas, so the matte, slightly faded surface of the original will only come with wear. We finished the leg with a chainstitch hem and kept the inside plain, with white twill pocketing.
A very heavy cotton twill woven in Italy by Tessuti di Sondrio, made with a dense three-ply construction that gives it a smooth, close finish. It is a solid khaki with a firm hand and is built for long, hard wear.
