White Herringbone Cotton Mandarin Collar Popover Shirt

Drake's popover is a summer shirt cut from a sturdy Japanese herringbone cotton and made in Portugal. It pairs a band collar, in the grandad tradition, with a short buttoned placket and a rounded map pocket that harks back to older workwear and travel shirts. The cut is relaxed and boxy. It is meant to be worn untucked with chinos or shorts, or under warm-weather tailoring.

Thomas Mason White Royal Herringbone

We looked for a white herringbone in pure cotton and chose a Thomas Mason two-ply twill, which matches the colour and pattern but is lighter, smoother and shinier than the original's sturdy Japanese cloth. We kept the grandad collar, the popover front, the rounded pocket, the straight hem and the mother-of-pearl buttons. Proper Cloth does not offer the unbuttoned straight hem cuff, so we chose a soft one-button barrel cuff with no sleeve placket button, which keeps the sleeve end plain.

A bright white herringbone twill from Thomas Mason, woven in Italy from 100s two-ply cotton. It is lightweight, with a smooth, silky hand, a noticeable sheen and good drape. The two-ply yarn makes it hard-wearing for its weight, and its finish is closer to a dress shirting than a casual cloth.
