Mayumi Y. for Drake’s Embroidered Cotton-Linen Camp Collar Short Sleeve Shirt

A limited-edition summer shirt made with the Tokyo painter Mayumi Yamase, built on Drake's plain camp-collar pattern. It keeps the usual holiday-shirt formula of an open collar, short sleeves and a square hem, and adds two flapped chest pockets. Small embroidered vines and flowers on each collar point are the artist's contribution. It is cut loose and made in Somerset from a midweight cotton-linen denim, so it can be worn untucked in warm weather.

Portuguese White Cotton and Linen Oxford

We picked a white cotton and linen oxford from a Portuguese mill because it is the closest Proper Cloth cloth to a midweight, textured white cotton-linen. Proper Cloth offers no denim weave in this blend, so the oxford's slubby linen texture stands in for the denim's character. We used a soft one-piece collar to give the open camp shape, and matched the French front, short sleeves, straight hem and mother of pearl buttons. Proper Cloth offers a western-style flap for flapped chest pockets, so we used it, and the embroidered collar motif has no equivalent in Proper Cloth's options.

The cloth is an oxford woven in Portugal from 38s yarns, listed as 51% linen and 49% cotton. It is medium weight, plain white, and the linen gives it a light slub. It is more opaque than most cotton-linen blends and should soften with wear. It must be air dried, because it shrinks more than standard shirting.
