Bright Navy Linen Spread Collar Shirt
This is a lightweight summer shirt in plain-weave linen, cut in a regular fit and finished in a bright navy that will soften with wear and washing. The cloth is woven in Como for Drake's, and the shirt is made in Somerset, with the single-needle construction and mother of pearl buttons used across the house's shirting. A spread collar and rounded one-button cuffs, both with brushed floating interlinings, mean it can be worn untucked with shorts or chinos, or with a summer suit or odd jacket.
In Proper Cloth
Baird McNutt Slate Blue Irish Linen
We chose a lightweight, solid plain-weave linen from Baird McNutt because it has the same open, irregular texture and summer weight as the original. Proper Cloth had no exact bright navy, so we used a slate blue, which is a softer and greyer shade. The spread collar, front placket, split yoke, curved hem, single chest pocket, one-button cuffs and mother of pearl buttons were all set to follow Drake's. The pocket is the angled style Proper Cloth offers, and the collar and cuffs have Proper Cloth's soft construction in place of Drake's brushed floating interlining.
This is a fine plain-weave Irish linen in a solid slate blue, woven and finished by Baird McNutt, a mill whose history on the Kellswater River goes back to 1798. It is lightweight, soft in the hand and has the slubby, uneven surface typical of linen. It should crease and soften with wear in the usual way.
