Red Stripe Linen Smock Shirt
Drake's smock shirt is a linen popover in a fine red and white stripe, cut on the lines of a traditional work smock. The pullover body is paired with an open collar and full sleeves, and it fastens at the neck with a single button and loop. It is made at the firm's Somerset factory with single-needle seams and mother of pearl buttons. The linen is chosen to crease and fade with summer wear, and the shirt is meant to be worn loose and untucked in warm weather.
In Proper Cloth
Stanton 120s Red Bengal Stripe
We chose a red and white bengal stripe because its narrow stripe and two colours come close to the scale and palette of the original. Proper Cloth does not offer a linen in this stripe, so we used a fine cotton broadcloth instead. We set a popover front, a soft one-piece collar to approximate the open smock collar, a single square chest pocket, a straight hem and mother of pearl buttons. A loop fastening and smock sleeves are not among the options, so the shirt closes with ordinary buttons and has soft one-button barrel cuffs.
The Stanton is a European-woven broadcloth in 120s two-ply cotton. It is very light and smooth, with a crisp hand and almost no surface texture. The red and white bengal stripe is slightly wider than a pencil stripe. Broadcloth creases readily, but it irons well and can also be worn unironed after washing.

- Their light weight tends to make them more prone to wrinkling than twills or pinpoints, however broadcloths iron up nicely and can even be worn washed without ironing for a more casual look. Finish: No Treatment.
