Mayumi Y. for Drake’s Stripe Cotton Camp Collar Short Sleeve Shirt
This short-sleeved shirt with an open collar comes from a limited collaboration between Drake's and the Tokyo painter Mayumi Yamase. It follows the long tradition of the warm-weather holiday shirt, kept deliberately simple: a loose body, a plain front and a square hem, made in Portugal from a light cotton. The artist's part is a koi or dragon motif, printed and embroidered on the chest pocket, and a woven neck label carries both names. It is made to be worn untucked in high summer.
In Proper Cloth
Stanton 120s Pink and Blue Multi Stripe Broadcloth
We looked for a light, plain-woven cotton with a fine multicolour stripe and settled on a 120s two-ply Italian broadcloth, which comes close to the original's poplin in weight and smoothness. The collar, short sleeves, single patch pocket, straight hem and mother of pearl buttons were set to match. Proper Cloth had no stripe in the original's ecru, rust, ochre and grey-blue, so we took a pink and blue multi stripe, and we chose a French front because it gives the open, uncluttered look the original has. The artist's pocket motif is part of the collaboration and could not be copied.
A very lightweight Italian broadcloth woven from 120s two-ply cotton, smooth and crisp with almost no surface texture. It carries a multicolour stripe in pink and blue. Like most broadcloths it creases fairly easily, but it irons well and can be worn unironed for a softer, more casual look.
