Khaki Cotton-Linen Crepe Cuban Shirt
Drake's short-sleeved Cuban shirt is its own take on the guayabera, a shirt long worn across Cuba and Latin America for its comfort in the heat. It is made in Portugal from a Japanese crepe woven from cotton with a small share of linen. The design keeps the main features of the type: a camp collar, four flapped patch pockets and stitched vertical pleats down the front, finished with fisheye mother-of-pearl buttons. It is meant as a light, untucked shirt for summer.
In Proper Cloth
Baird McNutt Olive Irish Linen
We picked a lightweight solid olive linen from Baird McNutt to match the original's khaki-olive colour and dry, slightly uneven surface, since none of the available cloths matched the cotton-linen crepe. We set a one-piece soft collar, short sleeves, a French front, flap pockets, a straight hem and mother-of-pearl buttons to follow the Drake's layout. Proper Cloth offers no guayabera pleats, so the front is plain. Its pockets come with rounded flaps and no buttons.
A lightweight plain-weave linen in 26s yarn, woven, dyed and finished by Baird McNutt in Northern Ireland. It is a mid-tone olive green with the soft hand and irregular slub typical of linen. It breathes well in heat and creases readily with wear.
