Blue Gingham Brushed Cotton Long Point Collar Popover Shirt
This is a popover shirt in navy and white gingham, made from brushed cotton at Drake's own factory in Somerset. The popover, with its short placket pulled on over the head, is a shape that has been part of menswear for around a hundred years, and Drake's treats it as central to the house style. Its version pairs a regular body with a long point collar on a floating interlining and single-needle seams. It is intended to work across casual and smarter settings, alone or beneath tailoring and knitwear.
In Proper Cloth
Irving Navy Mini Gingham Broadcloth
We chose a small-scale navy and white gingham in cotton broadcloth to match the colour and fine check of the original. We kept the popover front, the single flap chest pocket, a one-button barrel cuff, a curved hem and mother of pearl buttons. The brushed surface of the original has no direct counterpart in this cloth, so we accepted a smooth, lighter broadcloth instead. Proper Cloth's soft point collar stands in for Drake's long point, and the shirt is cut with a split yoke and quarter-inch edge stitching as Proper Cloth makes it.
A very lightweight cotton broadcloth woven from 60s single-ply yarns, with a smooth, soft finish. It carries a small navy and white gingham check and is light enough for wear through most of the year without feeling flimsy.
