Green and Burgundy Madras Check Cotton Button-Down Shirt
A summer button-down cut from Indian madras, the light, open cotton long associated with mid-century Ivy League dress. The cloth is woven from hand-spun yarn, so its surface is slubbed and uneven, and the natural dyes are expected to bleed a little in the wash. Drake's makes it in Italy in their classic silhouette, with a soft-rolling button-down collar, a pen-slot chest pocket and a box pleat at the back. It is meant to be worn loosely in warm weather, open at the neck or under a summer jacket.

Portuguese Grey Red and Green Plaid Twill
We looked for a multicoloured cotton check that carries the same mix of green, red and grey, and settled on a Portuguese twill from Somelos rather than a madras, which was not available in a comparable colourway. We set a soft Ivy button-down collar, one-button cuffs, a rounded chest pocket and mother-of-pearl buttons to follow the original's Ivy details. The twill cannot reproduce the slubby, hand-spun texture or the bleeding dyes of madras, so this version reads as a cooler-weather counterpart to the original.
A 50s single-ply cotton twill woven by Somelos in Portugal, soft in the hand and described by the seller as medium weight, a smoother and denser alternative to flannel. It carries a plaid of grey, red and green, and suits autumn and winter wear with chinos, jeans or knitwear.
