Black Ticking Stripe Cotton Pyjama Set
This is the shirt from a two-piece pyjama set, cut from Italian oxford cotton in a fine black and white ticking stripe and made in Somerset, England. Ticking began as a hard-wearing striped cloth for mattresses and pillows, and here it is used in a softer weight for nightwear. The shirt has a rounded collar, three patch pockets and a square hem, and it is sold with drawstring trousers in the same cloth. It is meant for sleeping and for lounging at home.

Stanton 120s Grey Bengal Stripe
We looked for a cotton stripe in a light colour and a dark colour on a white ground, and chose a mid grey bengal stripe because there was no black ticking stripe in oxford. The Stanton broadcloth is smoother and lighter than the original's oxford, so the shirt loses some of the ticking's texture but stays cool and soft against the skin. We matched the straight hem, the mother of pearl buttons and the clean front, using a French front, and we used a soft unfused one-piece collar to keep the relaxed feel of nightwear. Proper Cloth offers a single chest pocket rather than three patch pockets, and one-button barrel cuffs rather than plain unbuttoned ones, so we chose those.
A European broadcloth woven from 120s two-ply cotton, very light in weight, with a smooth, crisp hand and almost no surface texture. It has a bengal stripe in mid grey and white, a little wider than a pencil stripe. It creases more readily than a twill or oxford, but irons well and can be worn straight from the wash for a softer look.
