White, Purple and Green Madras Check Cotton Button-Down Shirt

This is a summer button-down shirt in madras, a cotton handwoven in Chennai, the Indian city once called Madras, from short-staple yarn spun by hand. The uneven yarn gives the cloth its slubbed surface, and the soft, varied colours of the check come from the way madras is dyed. The shirt is cut and sewn in Drake's Somerset factory with single-needle seams and a soft button-down collar in the mid-century Ivy manner. It is designed to be worn casually in warm weather, with light trousers and loafers.

Green White and Sky California Plaid

No handwoven madras was available, so we chose a lightweight cotton plaid with a soft hand and a fresh, multicoloured check of a similar scale, carrying the green and white of the original. We set a soft Ivy button-down collar, a front placket, a single chest pocket, a one-piece yoke, a shallow curved hem and mother of pearl buttons to follow Drake's details. Proper Cloth offers no pen pocket or rounded single cuff in this design, so we used a square patch pocket and a one-button barrel cuff instead.

A lightweight cotton twill in 30s yarn, plaid in fresh green, sky blue and white. It is left unbrushed, so it has some of the look of a flannel check while staying soft and light enough to wear across the year.
