Yellow and Pink Stripe Block Print Cotton Camp Collar Short Sleeve Shirt
This is a short-sleeved holiday shirt with an open camp collar, a type that has gone by many names over the years without changing much in substance. Drake's keeps it deliberately simple: a loose cut, a plain front, a square hem and mother of pearl buttons. The cloth is a cotton printed by hand with blocks in yellow and pink stripes on an ecru ground, which leaves the stripe edges slightly irregular. It is made in Somerset and is meant to be worn untucked in high summer.
In Proper Cloth
Baird McNutt Gold and Ivory Stripe Irish Linen
Proper Cloth does not offer a block-printed cotton, so we chose a lightweight Irish linen with a gold and ivory stripe. It gives a warm yellow stripe on a pale ground, and its slubby surface stands in for some of the irregularity of a hand print. We matched the open one-piece collar, short sleeves, straight hem, single chest pocket and mother of pearl buttons. Where we had to choose differently, we took a French front instead of a placket and an angled chest pocket, and the pink in the original's colourway has no equivalent here.
A fine plain-weave linen in 26s yarn, woven and finished by Baird McNutt, an Irish mill on the Kellswater River whose history goes back to 1798. It is light, soft and textured with the uneven slub that is typical of linen, and has a relaxed gold and ivory stripe. It breathes well in heat and creases readily as it is worn.
