Ecru and Blue Check Cotton Two-Pocket Work Shirt
Drake's two-pocket work shirt takes the plain, practical form of a workwear shirt and makes it in a softer, more considered cloth. This version is cut from a Japanese cotton with a slubbed, brushed surface in an ecru and blue check, with tan and grey running through it. Two flapped chest pockets carry small things so the trousers need not, and single-needle seams and corozo buttons keep the finish neat. It is meant to be worn untucked or as a light layer, at work or at the weekend.

Japanese Light Wash Indigo Brushed Plaid
We looked for a brushed Japanese cotton plaid with blue at its centre and chose a heavily garment-washed indigo twill flannel, which gives a soft hand and a faded, lived-in surface close to the original's texture. We matched the two rounded flap chest pockets, the single-button cuffs, the curved hem and the corozo buttons. Proper Cloth offers no cloth in this exact ecru, blue and tan colouring, so we accepted a cloth that reads mainly as faded blue. We also used a soft point collar with no fusing to come close to the softly interlined long point collar.
A brushed 20s twill flannel woven for Proper Cloth on vintage shuttle looms at a small Japanese mill, delivered as rigid dark indigo. The shirt is sewn first and then given a heavy wash, which turns the plaid a light, faded blue, softens the hand considerably and leaves fading along the seams. It is a heavyweight cloth and should keep fading gradually as it is worn and washed.
