Navy Weave Block Print Cotton Camp Collar Short Sleeve Shirt
Drake's short-sleeved camp collar shirt belongs to the long line of warm-weather holiday shirts: square at the hem, open at the neck and kept deliberately simple. This version is cut from a light, airy cotton printed by hand with wooden blocks in India, in navy on an ecru ground, and the shirt is made up in Portugal. The fit is loose and relaxed, with a plain front, a single chest pocket and knife pleats at the back, so it can be worn untucked in high summer.
In Proper Cloth
Portuguese Blue and White Tile Jacquard
We looked for a cotton in the same navy and off-white palette with a medium-scale repeating motif, and chose a limited Somelos cloth with a woven tile pattern in place of the hand block print. We matched the open one-piece collar, short sleeves, square chest pocket, straight hem and mother of pearl buttons. Proper Cloth offered no hand-printed cloth of this kind and no camp shirt back with knife pleats, so we used a dobby figured cloth and a one-piece yoke instead, and the sleeves were made with a short cuff.
This is a 100% cotton dobby in 38s yarn from the Portuguese mill Somelos, with extra cotton threads woven into the base to form a blue and white motif based on Lisbon wall tiles. It sits at the heavier end of a medium weight, so it has more body than a summer lawn or voile, and the pattern is part of the weave rather than printed on the surface.
