Green Madras Check Cotton Button-Down Shirt
A summer button-down cut from madras, the hand-spun cotton cloth named after the Indian city now called Chennai, where it is still woven. Its multicoloured check and naturally uneven yarn belong to the Ivy dress of the mid-twentieth century, and Drake's make it in Somerset with single-needle seams, a softly lined collar and whipped mother of pearl buttons. It is intended for warm weather, worn with casual trousers and loafers.

Canclini Blue Pink and White Plaid Broadcloth
Proper Cloth's range offered no true madras, so we chose a cotton plaid that keeps the pink, sky blue and white of the original's palette, accepting a smoother and more formal cloth in place of the slubby hand-spun weave. We set the details to follow the Drake's shirt where the options allowed: a soft unlined-style button-down collar, a one-button cuff, a front placket, a single rounded chest pocket, a split yoke and mother of pearl buttons. Fine 0.1 inch stitching stands in for the original's single-needle finish.
A broadcloth from the Italian mill Canclini, woven from 90s two-ply cotton into a smooth, fine and crisp cloth with a light, silky hand. It carries a pink and white plaid with blue, irons up cleanly and creases readily in wear.
