After Drake’s · Spring/Summer 2025
Navy Gingham Cotton Reversible Smock
The smock began as a working garment, worn by labourers and painters alike, and has since moved into the wardrobe of men who dress with some care. Drake's version is a light pullover in navy and white gingham, cut to the hip and a little loose through the body. It is made reversible, so the opposite colourway of the check shows at the collar and facing. Made in the firm's Somerset factory, it is intended as a light outer layer for changeable spring weather, thrown over a T-shirt or worn against a breeze in the evening.

Seabrook Dark Navy Medium Gingham Poplin
We chose a dark navy and white gingham at a medium scale, as close as the available cottons came to the small, crisp check of the original. We set a one-piece collar to give the open, camp-style lie of the Drake's collar, a popover front in place of a full button placket, a single square patch pocket and a straight hem. Proper Cloth does not offer reversible construction or a loop closure, so the piece is single-layered with a conventional popover placket, and we chose soft unfused construction to keep it relaxed.
A broadcloth poplin from Seabrook, woven in 50s two-ply cotton in each direction for a very light, smooth cloth with no surface texture. The pattern is a medium gingham in dark navy and white, a durable everyday shirting suited to warm weather and easy to layer in cooler months.
