Navy Needlecord Smock
The smock began as a working garment, worn by labourers and painters alike, and has since found a place in more considered wardrobes. Drake's version is cut in navy cotton needlecord and made in its Somerset factory. It pulls on over the head, sits at the hip and is a little loose through the body. It is meant as a light outer layer for the changeable weather of spring and autumn, worn over a T-shirt or a simple shirt.

Ketchum Navy Cotton Corduroy
We chose a navy 20-wale cotton corduroy, the closest Proper Cloth match to the fine rib and deep, even colour of the original needlecord. We set a popover front, a straight hem and a soft point collar so the shirt pulls on over the head as the smock does, and we picked pale blue buttons to echo the original's light-coloured neck button. Proper Cloth does not offer a loop closure or the smock's pair of offset patch pockets, so we used a standard buttoned popover placket and a single square chest pocket instead.
A 100% cotton 20-wale corduroy woven in Spain, in a solid navy. The weave gives it some natural give without any added elastane. The fine rib shows up close but reads as plain colour from a distance. Proper Cloth classes it as heavyweight but says it is lighter in hand than most corduroy, so it wears more like a soft twill and suits three seasons.
