Blue Chambray Smock
The smock started as a working garment, worn by labourers and painters alike, and has since moved into the casual wardrobe of men who care about clothes. Drake's version is a light outer layer in cotton chambray, cut to the hip and slightly relaxed through the body. It pulls on over the head, fastens with a single loop and button at the neck, and is made in the company's Somerset factory. It is intended for mild, changeable weather, worn over a T-shirt on a cool evening or as a light layer against a spring shower.

Portuguese Light Wash Indigo Slub Chambray
We chose a light wash indigo chambray from Portugal because its faded blue and slubbed surface come close to the colour and uneven cross-weave texture of the original. We set the shirt as a popover with a soft unstructured collar, a single patch chest pocket, a straight hem and pearl buttons to follow the smock's shape. Proper Cloth does not offer a loop closure with an open V neck or a plain hemmed cuff, so we used a conventional popover placket and soft one-button barrel cuffs instead. The pattern also brings a one-piece yoke, which the original does not show.
A Portuguese chambray in 100% cotton, woven with an indigo warp across a white weft and finished in a light wash, so the blue reads soft and faded from new. Slub yarns give the surface an irregular, rather hand-spun look. Proper Cloth lists it as medium heavyweight; it breathes well and softens with each wash.
