Black Herringbone Cotton Fatigue Trouser
Drake's fatigue trouser takes its pattern from old military issue and adapts it for everyday civilian wear. It is cut in Portugal from a Japanese cotton woven in a fine black herringbone, a cloth that is hard-wearing yet tidy enough for town, and that softens and marks with use. The working details of the original are kept: a button fly, reinforced front pockets, flapped rear patch pockets and adjusters at the waist. The rise is high and the leg is full through the thigh, then narrows cleanly to the hem, so it can be worn as a casual staple without looking like costume.
In Proper Cloth
Di Sondrio Black Stretch Chino
We chose a black cotton twill from Tessuti di Sondrio because it comes closest to the depth of colour and dependable weight of the original, although it is a plain twill and has no herringbone. We built the trouser on Proper Cloth's vintage chino block, which is the nearest match to the high rise and full leg, and specified fatigue front and back pockets, button-through rear flaps, a button fly, belt loops and a flat front to follow the Drake's details. Proper Cloth offered no herringbone in this colour and weight, so we took the solid twill. We picked charcoal horn buttons and a wide hem to stay close to the original's plain finish, and black pocketing to keep the inside dark.
A black cotton twill from the Italian mill Tessuti di Sondrio, mixed with 2% elastane for a small amount of give. It is medium to heavy in weight and has a smooth, firm hand that keeps its shape. It suits wear in every season and stands up to daily use.
