Ecru Linen Spread Collar Shirt
This is a plain linen summer shirt in ecru, designed so that the cloth softens, creases and fades as it is worn. The linen is woven in Como for Drake's, and the shirt is sewn in Somerset with single-needle seams and mother of pearl buttons, as the house's other shirts are. It has a spread collar and rounded single-button cuffs, and it can be worn loose over shorts or chinos, or tucked in under a lightweight suit or odd jacket.
In Proper Cloth
White Washed Linen
We chose a lightweight pure linen in plain weave because it has the same open, slubby texture and dry, cool hand as the original. Proper Cloth had no ecru in this cloth, so we used its white instead. We matched the details: a soft spread collar, one-button barrel cuffs, a front placket, a single chest pocket and mother of pearl buttons. The hem is shallow curved, where the original's is straight, and the shirt is washed after sewing, which gives it a softer, more worn-in feel.
The cloth is a single-ply 14s linen in a plain, fairly open weave. It is light and airy, with a clearly slubby surface. It is bright white and solid, creases easily and softens with wear, and this shirt is washed once made, so it starts out soft with some puckering at the seams.
