Navy Linen Cotton Games Tunic

The Games Tunic is a long-sleeved overshirt modelled on the military tunic jackets of the early twentieth century. It is made in Portugal from an Italian linen and cotton blend, and the finished garment is washed so that it looks and feels as if it has already been worn. A shirt collar, a darted waist and four pleated pockets put it somewhere between a field coat and a shirt. It is meant to be worn as a light outer layer in warmer weather.

Portuguese Navy Cotton and Linen Oxford

We chose a solid navy linen and cotton oxford, which keeps the dry, slubby texture of a linen-rich cloth and comes close to the original's colour. We matched the point collar, one-button barrel cuffs, front placket and straight hem, and we used safari pockets with flaps to stand in for the pleated tunic pockets. Proper Cloth offered no darted, princess-seamed body or four-pocket front, so the shirt is built on a one-piece back yoke with chest pockets only. We also chose brown horn buttons where the original has navy-dyed mother of pearl.

The cloth was developed with the Spanish mill Sidogras: a medium-weight oxford-type weave in 40s yarns, roughly half linen and half cotton, in a deep solid navy. The linen gives it a gentle slub and lets more air through than a cotton oxford, and it stays fairly opaque for its weight. It creases more readily than pure cotton and softens with wear.
